The project involved various short term projects which served as case studies to understand on air promotional graphics for a music television channel. It involved four months of work on various projects such as show packaging as well as the creation of theme based Idents for the channel. It also included experimenting with various mediums. Each project had to follow several mediums and the various stages of the design process, completed till the final execution.
Scooty Miss Teen Diva was a reality show wherein behind-the-scenes cat-fights of the contestants of the Miss Teen India beauty pageant contest, as well as the various well known people involved in the grooming of the contestants, were to be aired by MTV. Thus, the packaging had to reflect the mood of the show.
Next, MTV required various Idents which would reflect the new grunge look it was going into. It required very stark imagery, a certain amount of violence and a don’t-care attitude. It aimed at being abstract, but strong and stark at the same time, so that it would leave a mark. MTV chose to make use of the grunge elements for all its Idents as the grunge style involved a dirty look with irregular, nasty, sometimes even ugly and crooked visual elements and would go perfectly well with its new look. After the grunge ident, I also worked on an Ident for Vh1.
The scope of my project involved the study of promotional graphics for television especially that of a music channel; an overall understanding of the role of graphic design in the broadcasting industry; the role a graphic designer plays in the various promotions of the shows, etc. It provided a personal understanding of the broadcasting television industry in general, and its working in particular.
