I did my diploma project in motion graphic design, in the broadcast industry at INX Media. The project included channel packaging, show packaging, channel ID and promo graphics for INX Network which had launched three new channels: 9X, a means of better quality entertainment for India’s mainstream audience; 9XM, a music channel for India’s youth; and NewsX, a channel providing English news to Indian viewers.
There was a lot of scope for a graphic designer in this project. My task was to design the graphic style, look and feel of the NewsX channel which was striking, modern, and stylish, and different from those of existing channels. The theme of the channel was clarity in a complex world. The channel quite deliberately targeted the top of the pyramid - the CEO’s, entrepreneurs, business leaders and professionals who are leading India today and a rising well-educated new generation.
I first tried to understand the scenario of broadcast design, studying contemporary channels and broadcast trends. In terms of animation and composition, the process of design included ideation, conceptualization, visual story boarding, and final execution.
My final deliverables were four stings (show openings) for NewsX, for the shows called ‘Morning News,’ ‘Working Lunch,’ ‘Sports Live’, and ‘Bureau Hour.’ I also had a chance to work on a bunch of other things such as promos, end pages, channel idents, show logos, etc.
As the title of my project states, it was truly an enriching experience in the field of motion graphics. I figured out similarities and differences between print based graphic design and motion graphics. Throughout the project, my endeavour was to make people understand the value of design. I feel creative licence is truly a luxury. Balancing both, the creative flow and the client’s wishes, is really a challenge.
