Exhibition design
The main objective of my exhibition design project was to restore the demand of traditional toys in the mainstream by making people aware of their benefits and by exhibiting them as alternatives to modern toys.
Toys play a major role in the lives of children, especially in India. With time, toys have been transformed from natural materials like clay and wood to man-made materials like plastics. In today’s world of play stations and remote-controlled toys, traditional toys seem to be on the verge of extinction.
Today, traditional toys can only be found in places like fairs, bazaars and villages. This genuine threat needs to be tackled since many of our traditional toys have scientific principles underlying their working, which children learn, knowingly or unknowingly, while playing with them. Since the potential of traditional toys as tools for science education has not been explored completely, there is a need to showcase them and to generate awareness about their potential use. They also connect children with nature easily as most of them are made from natural materials and also because of their shapes, sizes and structures.
A few similarities in the Indian and Portuguese toys, led Fábrica to hold an exhibition in Portugal. This exhibition aimed at giving these toys the right platform in the market so that more and more people, especially children develop an interest in them. It intended to bring these toys back to the mainstream by replicating marketing strategies and making apt use of media. The latter strategy has made modern toys like the “bay-blade” preferable to the humble Indian top.
The aim now should be to bring this exhibition to India, as it is, after all, a compilation of Indian toys and is bound to interest children in the country.
