My project, ‘Web Comic Design’, sponsored by Big Fat Phoenix, Chennai, looks at formalising visual design guidelines for an author owned website: www.sacredcow.co.in. It hosts comics created purely by the author in collaboration with many other artists who illustrate the stories. The project involved creating the look and feel of the website. It also focused on content building by providing illustrations for one of the stories and developing characters for a series, imparting the scope of becoming a flash animation at a later stage.
Comics on websites are a recent phenomenon. The easily accessible and affordable nature of the World Wide Web, i.e. the internet, lends itself to the proliferation of comics and its readers. The two main agenda in this project were to understand comics as sequential art and see them in the context of the web, and to design for the web itself.
The methodology I adopted for the project was divided into three phases. The first phase included the research and understanding of the medium, the concept of web hosting and creating the architecture of the site. Once the visual feel and architecture was in place, the layouts and navigation were designed accordingly. The third phase involved illustrating four short stories that were to be subsequently uploaded on the site. This technically involved creation of the art work, digitization, optimization and integration. There were many other processes that went on simultaneously in this project such as design of the logo, exploring the webpage design, etc.
Through the project, I learnt that comics in India have their own limited history and growth. The fusion of comics and the internet still being in a nascent stage, creation of a web-comic hosting site in the Indian context is one of the early attempts in this direction.
