The story sprung out of the most unlikely place: a chance encounter with a hitherto unknown surrealist painting, titled ‘A Little Night Music’ by American Painter Dorothea Tanning. The interpretation of the painting formed the storyline of my film.
The painting depicts the scene of a hotel hallway with doors in a row; the last door is open and lit from within. There is a huge, semi-wilted, but juvenile sunflower right in the middle of the hallway. Two similarly dressed girls are shown in the picture. One is nearly naked, with loose blonde hair and a mask over her face. She is clutching a sunflower petal and looking defeated, and leaning against the door, while the other is a brunette, with clothes torn, yet fully dressed, with hair bolt upright and a posture as if ready to fight.
The painting was interpreted as depicting two faces of the same girl child – a child who has been sexually abused, as evidenced by the torn clothes and the motif of a juvenile sunflower that has been plucked before time. The fragile child represents that part of the child who can’t let go off the trauma and is clinging to it – represented by the sunflower petal she is clutching. The strong child represents that part of the child who is ready to move on with life despite the horror she has gone through.
The protagonist of the film, Sanjayaa, like all young victims of abuse, is initially in denial. She attempts to run away from the trauma, but eventually she realizes that she has to confront it. Finally, she does it successfully, though not without some tribulations.
The film is simply an honest attempt of mine that expresses my outrage at the brutality of the crime and public apathy towards it.
