Poem based film
Little boy
Dreams
Industrialisation
My film is based on a self-composed poem. I wrote this poem drawing from my personal experience. My ideas came to me in the form of visuals. I found it hard to weave a logical cause-effect story around them. I realised that a story need not be the only starting point for a film. It could be a painting or any other form of art. Therefore, I wrote a poem.
After working again and again on the poem, I realised that this was still a poem and not a story on which I could work out a script. So, instead of persistently trying to translate my thoughts as a story, I attempted to make my film a visualisation of the poem. I wanted to keep the structure of the film like the poem. One big challenge was to try and convey the same meaning as in the poem, but through an audio visual medium.
A little boy works at a roadside hotel, but has dreams of being educated and going to school. His dreams get shattered but his strength persists. A true experience compelled me to take up this theme. I started reviewing my life from the time I left my village, did my graduation and then came to NID. I went deeper into the relationships I have shared with people over the years. All this formed the base of my film. My film echoes how, somewhere in the era of globalization, industrialization has left its mark on human relations as well.
There are lots of things I learnt about myself and the process of animation. I worked for about eight months on this project, and when my film was completed I gained a great deal of confidence.
