‘Bees Saal Baad’ is a gag based film which spoofs Bollywood and is replete with unexpected though seemingly stupid events.
The film is about a director, who is making a film based on the concept of two friends who meet after 20 years. Since the director has a limited budget for the film, he hires two amateurs who are facing the camera for the first time in their lives. The film shows the interaction between the director and the animated characters who keep raising unreasonable demands throughout. It results in the director feeling extremely bullied and compelled to fulfil all of them, considering he has no other option. Despite the gags, the story has a few ongoing political issues which are dealt with in a light and tangy way making it one of the most important features of the film. While the story is about the making of a film, the film unveils several acting flaws, a variety of production mistakes and many other elements that make it interesting and humorous.
Since I was thinking of many complications in the film, I thought of keeping the look and feel of the film simple and interactive. I chose not to use colours and kept it almost black and white. I used scribbled drawings for the characters and stop-motion for the director.
When I reflect on the production process today, I feel I could have done much better which clearly shows that I have grown. A self sponsored film like this one teaches you a lot; makes you realize where you actually stand. More interesting is the fact that during the two years of animation film design course I did not realise what my positive and negative points were, but with this project I did.
