Short animation films for children
Spirit of fun and adventure
My project involved the creation of a channel identity for Hungama TV through short films not exceeding thirty seconds. The aim was to promote the channel through a wide range of subjects from pre-historic dinosaurs to an absurd chase sequence of Roman alphabets. The common factor in these films was their happy ending resolving into the logo of the channel.
Looking for a diploma project is like looking for a nail in a pit full of needles. I ended up knocking on the doors of major animation houses. Searching through the pit of needles, I finally ‘nailed it’ with Hungama TV. I got a chance to make four animated films of thirty seconds duration. Hungama TV, since its inception, has always lived up to its “For the kids, by the kids” motto. After reviving its new look, Hungama TV wanted its programme to be more trendy than ethnic. So, I was asked to make something on the trendier side.
The target audience being children of all ages, the films were to have the flavour of fun and adventure, and be a bit unusual. My direct sources of inspiration were Tom and Jerry films and Bugs Bunny films, especially, ‘Water Water Every Hare’ (1952). Even though these films were not channel identity films, their madness, superb characterization and twisted plots were some of the features that fascinated me. Hence, I tried to incorporate some of these elements in the films I executed.
Thirty seconds of viewing time is too less for any elaborate plot to evolve. The design process I learned at NID helped me to assess my own approach towards a professional setup. Delivering quality in restricted time was a lesson I learned the hard way.
