Video textures
My diploma project was a self funded one because I wanted to put my best foot forward to explore, to try all that I had wanted, and to exhaust all ideas that I was passionate about in the field of animation. Making a complete film, I felt, would not only increase my value in the industry, but also give me great confidence to term myself a professional and not a mere student. Entering the industry after six months would do me no harm.
The film tries to explain the concept of “truth” in a philosophical manner by means of the simple story of a character called Wilson Perriera. Wilson is a cemetery keeper in a village and a man of strange habits. The story revolves around the mystery of some missing fish from Wilson’s house. Some of his pets come up with their own interpretation about what the ‘truth’ could be.
I have tried to experiment with multiple mediums of filmmaking on one platform to tell a story. I decided to make a miniature set. Compositing 2D animation into a video is something that I had wanted to experiment with for a long time. Also, since my film set is set in the spirit world, I needed to build an air of something that is not of the human world. Here, I came up with the idea of “video textures.” I wanted a dreamy look to the whole video, and the solution for that was to make things a little blurred and play around with lights.
The most important thing to tackle was to come up with good strong concepts. I have not transformed into a great story teller, but I know what pitfalls to avoid next time.
