My project was to develop a display system for retail stores and malls that would play an important role in attracting customers to what the store is selling. Today, visual merchandising and store design are moving towards what we call ‘smart design,’ so the main aim was to attractively and quietly accentuate the product through an innovative display.
The one thing that actually aids the selling and branding of the product, and yet is the much neglected front is ‘retailing,’ which is the face of the brand. In other words, the way products are displayed at retail shelves, the way sales people communicate to the consumer, etc. are some of the issues, which if not handled well can pose a great threat to the brand’s image. Visual merchandising is that art of presentation which puts merchandise in focus. It educates customers, creates desire and, finally, augments the selling process. My project focussed on the same area.
I had to design a shelving display system in sheet metal, making optimum use of technology and processes available with the sponsor. The objective of my project was to conceive a system that was generic and not brand specific, yet had appropriate configurations that helped in its transformation into a brand specific system. Moreover, I wanted to make it fit to be assembled on site. Being able to be configured in a number of new ways, it gave the company a different edge over other companies.
On a personal level, the project has been a great learning experience as it helped to understand retail spaces and their functions in a different way. Working under constraints helped me to focus in specified directions, take quick decisions and to communicate design to people during the execution of the project.
