Glass furniture
The initial design brief given by the company, Mahavir Creations, a sister-concern of the Indian Picture House in Ahmedabad, was development of designs to be displayed in a showroom with the present infrastructure for the middle to the high income group, without losing focus on the present clientele. I was expected to give them panels which were more sophisticated compared to the then current designs.
The company was opening a new showroom for which display in glass and some glass furniture needed to be designed. Since the products were to be designed for a showroom and had to cater to masses at the same time, I had to come up with very few exquisite pieces.
The inspiration was derived from various aspects of nature and inlay at the Taj Mahal. This helped in delivering a larger range of surface designs to the glass. The product range designed consists of wardrobe panels, partitions, bathroom partitions, kitchen shutters, side tables, mirrors and centre tables. From the survey it was clear that most consumers liked their glass clear or with little colour.
To have a better understanding of their present clientele and work, I took suggestions and inputs from the marketing team of the company, and understood the available infrastructure and the production procedures. From these discussions, I internalized the quality of work that their competitors produced, the customer’s choice and the retail sector. I also visited certain sites where glass from various industries has been installed for a better understanding of the kind of products produced.
The project has made me understand the difference between the ideal way of working and the practical way of working in the industry. It has enabled me to implement and combine my capabilities, knowledge, understanding of the material and my industrial experience into a hands-on project.
