Floor and wall bathroom tiles
My diploma project with Regency Ceramics Limited, one of the largest floor tile manufacturing companies in India, at Yanam in Andhra Pradesh, was an intensive industrial experience for me. The Company’s initial design brief was to create designs for enhancing the aesthetic appearance of floor and wall tiling for corporate office lobbies, domestic buildings, and living spaces.
Today, the use of tiles has grown from being merely functional elements in kitchens and bathrooms to ‘ambience’ creators in other living spaces. In the last few years, the range of floor tiles has extended to taking over the impression of even floor coverings, mats, etc. and has been widened to include the vibrant look, once the exclusive domain of curtains and wall hangings. An increasing demand, due to the durability of the material, has led to the introduction of a wide range of patterns, textures, and colours for the consumer to choose from; although much of this choice still depends on the region of the country and local taste of the consumers there.
In order to acquaint myself with the various products of the company, their customers, sales, etc. I was required to conduct a market survey, on the basis of which I got to understand the present scenario of the market, present trends, people’s choice, customer behavior, and dealers’ views about the products and design of Regency Ceramics Limited.
The end product was a new kind of bathroom tile called the “highlighter.” The three themes finalized on the basis of the survey conducted were ‘Desert’, ‘Sea’ and ‘Himalaya’.
It has been an interesting and challenging experience to work with the constraints of the industry. This has allowed me to look at design possibilities afresh and learn how to make the most of the least.
