For my project, I was required to come up with a handheld device application for blue collar workers in a warehouse scenario for the interaction and information flow of the application.
The project involved understanding the characteristics of blue collar workers, their nature of work, their roles across various industries and studying and analyzing various aspects of mobile interaction.
I built the User Interface (UI) framework and designed the entire interaction of the application for the project. Aiding workers to achieve complete unhindered mobility was the crux of the solution. Based on the framework devised, I also identified and laid down certain reusable design patterns of mobile interaction for focused and guided usage.
The methodology that I followed included basic domain research, competitive analysis, user study analysis and findings, task analysis, and information architecture. I studied and came up with the mobile interaction pattern of users and the capabilities of various handheld devices. Based on this study and analysis, I delivered wireframes and final prototypes of the application which showcased the interaction and the flow of information.
The project provided me an opportunity to study in detail and understand different aspects of interaction design. While designing for handheld devices, I realized the challenges and constraints of working with small screen interfaces and the importance of minute detail in design. In course of the project, I gathered how user experience varies from a big screen to a mobile device screen.
The journey of the project was an enriching experience. Industry experience in SAP gave me an opportunity to work and interact with people having different work profiles and backgrounds. In the six months of the project, I went through the process of user centred design in its totality, as it is followed.
