NID is entering the 50th year of its existence from the India Report
to be a premier institution of a multi campus culture. It has seen
many springs, many achievements under various leaderships.
Everyone has contributed to its growth and recognition by their
vision and approach. Slowly, it has become a “brand” in itself.
Brand NID, once known to the international body of designers,
has become a sought after entity in our own country. This is a very
satisfying thought for any premier institution. However, to retain
the prime position one has to keep moving forward. The success
of Brand NID lies in its inherent quality of design teaching and
design practice. The trust vested in NID by the government and
the industry time and again gives us motivation to move forward.
NID is an idea, a strategy which is not associated with one building
or one campus; it can take any shape, be any size or can have
a cellular growth i.e. every part can be developed into a fully grown
unit. This is a process of growth which is inevitable to meet the
ever growing demand of good designers for the industrial, the
social and craft sectors.
After reaching the milestone of half a century, NID, today, is poised
for a quantum leap. Many things will change, new guards will take
over; the founding faculty is slowly moving out, a young and enthusiastic
crop of faculty is taking over. This transition, once a dreadful
thought, has come to pass so smoothly that it proves that the
basic foundation of the Institute is very strong and can withstand
any change. “Change” is synonymous with growth and this has to
be understood by one and all. Families which remain united last
longer. In NID, everyone has a role to play and if they do it with
sincerity NID will remain the NID of our dreams.
I am happy to see “Young Designers ‘08” edition, published with
professional quality and a great deal of commitment from the
entire team. This is an important document and a passport for
our graduating students to enter the world of creative industry
full of opportunities and challenges.
It is heartening to see students graduating from NID which is a
borderless institution – a true “brand” of the new and resurgent
India which is now a global player in the international arena.
I see a big future for NID and the graduating students. I wish them
luck and a bright future ahead…
