The creation of innovative products, processes, services, and systems has great signifi cance and will increasingly play a prominent role in our economical and social activities.
In the recent past, there has been a substantial growth in the creative economy and large numbers of students are aspiring to receive an education in the creative fi eld. Design plays a pivotal role in social development. In recent times, greater emphasis has been laid on value based education by focusing more on it and exposing the design fraternity to the promotion of responsible design: design which takes cares of the environment, sustainability issues, co-existence, harmony and ethical practices.
At the same time, making design education relevant to today’s context can demonstrate the social and economic benefi ts of design. Design can contribute to the success of the innovation process. Putting at the forefront success achieved by various organizations can contribute to spreading awareness about the role of design. Today, many industries involve NID students through classroom projects, design competitions, and particularly, through diploma projects where a great deal of synergy has been created between industry and NID. They derive and tap innovative potential of young minds and effectively use it for their development.
This innovative teaching methodology makes NID education very relevant and keeps it updated based on the context. On one hand, students get to work on live projects for getting better understanding of market reality before launching themselves in the professional world of design and at the same time, the industry also gets a larger view point of creative thinking, academic perspective which deals with many critical issues of material culture, environmental concern, sustainable growth and new directions, as each project is guided by experienced faculty members who contribute their view points in the project.
I wish all the graduating young designers great success in their future; their work presented in this book will surely disseminate and spread the test of excellence enabling India to establish its place in the world of design.
